What is the best way to compare Web hosting? It depends on your needs and we will give you a few tips on how to select the right Web host for your business or personal Web site.
Types of Web Hosting
There are three categories of Web hosting (excluding free hosting). We list them in order of price and explain what each type is all about:
Shared Hosting (Cheapest)Shared or Virtual Web hosting is the most basic type of Web hosting service you can buy. You pay a monthly or yearly fee and get access to a server with a control panel where you can add a certain amount of domains and are limited to space and bandwidth depending on the plan you have selected.
Shared hosting is great for a small business or individual that plans on hosting one or a few small Web sites that do not require a lot of resources. Depending on how many other accounts and sites are hosted the performance may be average to poor. If you plan on getting any decent amount of traffic at all or want to host multimedia, or a large discussion forum you should not choose shared hosting. You can always start with shared hosting and upgrade if your budget is tight to begin with. Shared hosting can be had for as little as a month usually if you pay for a quarter of a year or more.
Benefits: Cheap, easy to accessDownside: Not great performance wise, no control over server, lacks advanced features
Virtual Private Server (Medium Price)The VPS or virtual private server is an excellent option if you have some technical knowledge and don’t mind getting your hands dirty. For people that like to have more control but don’t need all of the resources of a dedicated server this is a good choice. Perfect for about any application and prices run at about monthly for decent service.
Benefits: Better performance, some control over serverDownside: Technical knowledge needed, more expensive
Dedicated Hosting (Most Expensive)If you plan on hosting a lot of smaller sites or have a few that are going to be resource hogs, such as media sharing, virtual communities, large message boards you will want to look at selecting a dedicated server as your hosting option. They are pricy, but with Web hosting you definitively get what you pay for. Expect to pay 0 and up for a dedicated hosting package, and more if you require help managing it.
Benefits: Best performance and reliabilityDownside: Expensive, need technical knowledge if not using fully managed solution
