Keep Your Ecommerce Web Design Clean – Avoid Confusing Users
Article by Arjun Dasgupta
For a successful ecommerce website, you need to plan your website design carefully. There is no doubt that ecommerce business is profitable and easy to set up, but if your customers don’t like your ecommerce website design, they will not visit your site. There are already hundreds of ecommerce websites in Web, but only a handful of them make millions by selling products online.
When you evaluate the design of several ecommerce websites, you will find many mistakes in their website design. If you make the same mistakes, you will never be able to increase your customer base. Here are some of the common ecommerce web design mistakes and how you can solve them.
1. Confusing Navigation – When you sell various products, you need to design your navigation bar very carefully. Group the products under proper categories and sub-categories to offer your customers a seamless navigation process.
2. Not Showing Detailed Product Information – When people buy a product from a local store, the storekeeper describes them about the qualities of that product. Web users expect the same treatment from an ecommerce website. If you don’t write detailed product information, how can your customers know about your product? Give detail product description such as size, color, material etc.
3. No Contact Information – You have to earn your customers’ trust to make your online business successful. Your customers will check your contact information vigilantly before placing an order in your site. If there is no contact information in your site, they will think that you will cheat them. You should always place your phone number, email address and office address near the header area in your website to establish a transparent image.
4. Complicated checkout process – A long and confusing checkout process can compel the buyers to leave your site. Thus, you must design a simple and short checkout process to sell more products. Try to design short forms and guide the customers during checkout process.
5. Sign Up to Add Product in the Cart – If you ask customers to sign up before adding a product to the shopping cart, they will not be interested in your site. Let the customers select and add items to the shopping cart without signing up. You can ask them to sign up once they hit the “pay” button.
6. No Search Tool – These are several ecommerce solutions in the market, but not all of them come with a search tool. If there is no search tool in your site, some of your buyers may not buy products from your site. They don’t have the time to check your huge product gallery to find a small product. Hence, you must embed a search tool in your site and help the customers find any product within a few seconds. Make sure that the search results can be sorted in “most popular”, “newest” etc. categories.
7. Small Product Images – Your customers would always like to see the products minutely before placing an order and if you give small images of your products, they won’t be convinced. Therefore, you must use large and high resolution product images to please your buyers.
8. Single Product Image – You must give multiple images of every product from different angle. Show how a product looks from different angle and lure your customers to buy the product.
9. Shopping Cart Is Not Visible – You have to show the shopping cart information all the time and convince your customers that they are adding correct products to the shopping cart. Place the shopping cart information at the top right corner of your website or at the right sidebar area so that your customers can easily find it.
10. Restricted Payment Option – Some ecommerce websites only offer credit card and PayPal payment options. All of your prospective customers may not have credit card or PayPal account and therefore, you will lose them. Apart from credit card and Paypal, you should offer multiple payment options such as dedit card/net banking/cheque/ cash on delivery etc.
Designing a flawless ecommerce website is certainly a challenging task. However, if you are careful and dedicated, you can design a user friendly ecommerce website and boost your online business.
